Taghazout, Morocco · Surf seasons
There are waves in Taghazout every month of the year. The right time to come depends on your level: winter brings the big swells that made Taghazout famous, while summer has small, friendly waves that are perfect for learning. Here is what to expect in each season.
Winter is when the North Atlantic sends its strongest swells to Morocco. Anchor Point, Killer Point and the other point breaks around Taghazout come to life, with long right-handers on the best days. Mornings are often clean and the days are sunny and mild. It is also the busiest season, so expect company at the famous spots. Beginners can still learn in winter: on bigger days our instructors take you to sheltered beaches where the waves are smaller.
Spring keeps a good number of swells but they are usually more manageable. It is a great season for improvers who want to move from the whitewater to green waves, and for groups with mixed levels. The crowds of winter have gone and the weather is warm.
Summer brings smaller, softer waves and the warmest water of the year. Beach breaks like Panoramas and Devil's Rock are perfect for first lessons, and you can surf in a light wetsuit. If you have never surfed before, or you are coming with family, this is the easiest time to start.
From September the swells start building again while the water is still warm. Line-ups are quieter than in winter, so autumn is a good choice if you want consistent waves without the crowds.
A 4/3 mm wetsuit from November to March and a 3/2 mm from June to September; in spring and autumn either works depending on the day. In our surf camp packages the wetsuit and board are included, so you do not need to bring your own.
For experienced surfers, December to February brings the biggest and most consistent swells. For beginners, June to September has the smallest, gentlest waves and the warmest water.
Yes. There are waves every month. What changes is the size: bigger in winter, smaller in summer, and medium in spring and autumn.
About 16–19°C from November to March and 20–23°C from June to September. A 4/3 mm wetsuit is best in winter; a 3/2 mm is enough in summer.
Christmas, New Year and the winter months are the busiest, especially at the famous point breaks. Spring and autumn are quieter with good waves.
